PSILC has stepped up to the plate:

PSILC provide free clinics to help individuals and families who are struggling with health problems and lack viable options.
PSILC provide education on nutrition, exercise, stress reduction, and disease awareness.
PSILC provide screenings at these clinics and have resulted in early detection of life threatening symptoms.

Lions Quest Makes the Grade in Turkey

Lions Quest is helping students in Turkey learn how to handle tough situations in a positive way.

Students worldwide confront bullying, peer pressure and a day’s worth of anxious moments that impact

their health, academic performance and well-being. In Turkey, these challenges—and their outcomes—are even more consequential because of a highly competitive school system with limited opportunities for post-secondary education.

“Turkey has a very young population. Only one-third of the kids can go into university. There is a lot of competition. The kids are always under stress,” says Past District Governor Nilgun Erdem Niord of the Mavi Halic Lions Club.

This is where Lions Quest comes in. Through this Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF) program, students are learning valuable life skills and discovering how to make positive choices through social and emotional learning. The program is now in public and private schools across Turkey.

Since 2009, Lions in Multiple District (MD) 118 have been given more than $275,000 in LCIF grants for Lions Quest, working with the Turkish Lions Foundation. For the Lions of Turkey, these grants helped make change possible. “My club has always been active in education. When we knew that we could get help from LCIF to start Lions Quest, it helped us to push the button and start,” says Niord.

Currently, Lions Quest is the only social and emotional learning program available in Turkey, where it has the support of the Ministry of Education. An evaluation of Lions Quest in Turkey is being conducted through Bospherus University, with results forthcoming. However, Lions and educators already can see the value of social and emotional learning.

“I got involved in the program because the training was so impressive to me,” says Mine Guven, a professor of early childhood education at Bospherus University. “The challenges are the same all around the world. By using Lions Quest we manage to have peaceful classrooms.”

More than 1,000 teachers in Turkey have been trained to use Lions Quest in the classroom, reaching thousands of students. “Educating–giving some skills to one teacher means you’re reaching hundreds, thousands of children in a lifetime,” says Fatos Erkman, a professor of education, a trained clinical psychologist and an administrator of the Bospherus University Peace Education Application and Research Center. “We’re very excited to be in alliance with Lions clubs because one of the aims of our center is for peace education at all levels. The Lions Quest curriculum for all grade levels is very fitting in our ideals.”

Updated Lions Quest materials addressing modern issues and challenges facing our children will be available in early 2015. Through grants, MD 118 will translate, adapt and update the curriculum to reflect Turkish culture. The goal is to create an environment in which students can focus and get more out of their classroom experience. So far, it seems to be working.

“Peace starts in the individual, and this is what Lions Quest is doing,” says Niord. “We are teaching the children how to be peaceful within themselves, how to be peaceful within their societies. And this will bring a peaceful world.”

Meet Lion Noelene, a Generous Spirit Today’s guest blog post was written by Annabelle Regan. Annabelle and her fellow university classmates created this video, “Noelene from Lions,” as a part of a group project to create a short documentary about an

unsung hero in their community. For more information, follow the Lions Clubs of Australia on Facebook, and stay up-to-date on their current projects and activities.

Thirty-four years of service to Lions Club Australia is no small feat. Noelene Heggart and her fellow Lions at the Lions Club of Mayfield Waratah for the Blind and Vision Impaired, have a passion and generosity that has driven them to work tirelessly for other people for so many years. And they show no signs of slowing down just yet.

Joining the Lions Club in 1979, Noelene worked hard to move from being a “Lions Lady” to the first female district governor of 201N3. During her period as governor, she was instrumental in the chartering of the Lions Club of Mayfield Waratah Blind and Vision Impaired in 1997, and has been to every meeting since. The club was formed on the idea of allowing everyone, no matter what their ability is, to contribute to making their community a better place. Seventeen years later, that ideology still remains.

They give wherever they can. Last year donations were made to 24 different causes, nationally and globally. They never set any focus on monetary goals, instead focusing on contributing where they can. In every charitable project, everyone participates in whatever way they are able. From Christmas shoebox appeals, charity raffles, lucky envelopes to larger projects supporting Special Needs children in the Kiribati islands; sending over educational supplies as well as measured canes for the blind and vision impaired children. These Lions’ wish is only to help those less fortunate.

I met Noelene after a search to record a short documentary about an unsung hero in my community. After first meeting with her, it was immediately evident that she possessed a kindness and positive spirit that was simply unparalleled. She was the heart of her local Lions Club. She welcomed me into their club like I was one of their own and inspired me with their love for their community and desire to see positive change.

Meeting Noelene and her fellow Lions was truly inspirational. Her selfless nature was immediately evident upon first meeting her. Listening to her speak of her efforts and achievements was never an individual effort, but work achieved through the Lions community of which she was a part. Her passion for the Lions club and helping those less fortunate in her community resonated with me. She truly encapsulates the Lions spirit: selfless, generous, passionate and constantly working to better her community.

The four minute film “Noelene from Lions” was made by April Linacre, Siobhan Kelly, Hunter Powell and Annabelle Regan as a University group project. Our aim was to showcase Noelene’s amazing generous spirit. << See Less

Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF) has earned its third consecutive 4-star rating from Charity Navigator for its effective fiscal management and its commitment to accountability and transparency.

Founded in 2001, Charity Navigator is the largest and most-utilized charity evaluator in the United States. Charity Navigator examines the financial health, accountability and transparency of charities to determine its ratings. Financial information is based on each charity’s 990 tax filing in the United States. Ratings show how well evaluated charities have sustained their programs and services over time.

LCIF’s 4-star rating indicates that it consistently executes its mission in a fiscally responsible way. Only 12 percent of the charities evaluated earned a third consecutive 4-star rating. This exceptional distinction means that LCIF outperforms most other charitable organizations in the United States. Recycle for Sight in May When Helen Keller named Lions “Knights of the Blind in this crusade against darkness,” Lions responded by making it our mission to serve blind and vision-impaired people everywhere. Today, we’re still known for our sight services — eyeglass recycling in particular. May is Recycle for Sight Month, and we encourage your club to participate and raise awareness about eyeglass recycling in your community. Many people often wonder how Lions eyeglass recycling works. The video above features a vision mission trip to Puerto Vallarta, organized by the Fargo Lions Club, and does a great job of explaining how eyeglasses are collected, sorted and distributed. The process begins with a simple eyeglass collection box, and ends with hundreds of eyeglasses given to children and adults in need. How is your club participating in Recycle for Sight Month? LQ: Lions Help Prevent Bullying The latest issue of Lions Quarterly features a segment about Lions programs that address a serious concern among today’s youth: bullying. As more and more young people use texting, email and social media as a form of communication, bullying goes even further than the school yard and can now follow kids wherever they go. The Lions Quest program provides resources that helps teachers open up a conversation about bullying in the classroom. The Leo Club program gets young people involved in community service activities, showing them the importance of helping others rather than hurting others. I always loving meeting new Lions who are so passionate and excited about serving their community, and it’s even better to see these Lions encouraging youth to get involved through Leo clubs. Because young Leos are the future of Lions! Be sure to engage the youth in your community by sponsoring a Leo club, inviting your children and grandchildren to family-friendly activities, and showing young people the importance of Lions service.

LQ: Lions Make Iceland Green The latest issue of the Lions Quarterly video magazine features Lions in Iceland who are addressing their country’s environmental concerns, such as soil erosion due to heavy deforestation. For decades, Lions have planted trees and grass in their communities — turning their “wounded” coastlines into green landscapes once more. Other projects include environmental cleanup activities, which encourage families and youth in the community to join in the service. Green projects such as these are great ways to bring the community together and work toward a better future. Watch the video above to see how Lions are making Iceland green.
