Recycle for Sight in May When Helen Keller named Lions “Knights of the Blind in this crusade against darkness,? Lions responded by making it our mission to serve blind and vision-impaired people everywhere. Today, we’re still known for our sight services — eyeglass recycling in particular. May is Recycle for Sight Month, and we encourage your club to participate and raise awareness about eyeglass recycling in your community. Many people often wonder how Lions eyeglass recycling works. The video above features a vision mission trip to Puerto Vallarta, organized by the Fargo Lions Club, and does a great job of explaining how eyeglasses are collected, sorted and distributed. The process begins with a simple eyeglass collection box, and ends with hundreds of eyeglasses given to children and adults in need. How is your club participating in Recycle for Sight Month? To start a Recycle for Sight program in your community, see our list of Lions Eyeglass Recycling Centers, and download our Club Guide for Collecting Used Eyeglasses.

LQ: Pediatric Cataract Initiative The April Lions Quarterly features the above segment about the Pediatric Cataract Initiative, a Lions Clubs International Foundation and Bausch + Lomb program that helps provide children with eye care and surgeries. In the video, meet young Pradip, a 7-year-old boy who lives in a remote Indian village near the Bangladesh border and who was diagnosed with pediatric cataract. Thanks to Lions, he got the care he needed to improve his vision, see and read clearly, and look toward a happier, healthier future. Find out more about the problems of cataract and childhood blindness and how LCIF is addressing this issue.
